Who Should Apply

Do you meet the following four criteria? If yes, you should apply for September 2018 admission into the Leadership by Design (LBD) Program.

  1. Ontario Grade 10: Starting September 2018, you will be enrolled in Ontario Grade 10. (This means you are currently enrolled in Grade 9.)
  2. Descent: You are of Jamaican, African-Caribbean (i.e. all Caribbean countries), or African-Canadian descent.
  3. Academic Courses: You will be enrolled in academic courses during Grade 10 and you aspire to attend university or college.
  4. Attend School in the GTA: In September 2018, you will be enrolled in a public, Catholic or independent secondary school within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

This includes schools within the following school boards:

  • Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB)
  • Peel District School Board (PDSB)
  • Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB)
  • Toronto District School Board (TDSB)
  • Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB)
  • York Region District School Board (YRDSB)
  • York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB)
  • Durham District School Board (DDSB)
  • Durham Catholic School Board (DCSB)

How to apply

STEP 1: Download and read the Application for Admission Guide. The Guide clarifies some of the questions in the application form and you should refer to it as you complete your application.

STEP 2: Complete the “fillable PDF’ application form. For your convenience, the LBD application form is designed so you may complete it on your computer or print a blank form and complete it by hand. Data typed into the form will not be saved. Hence, you must be prepared to print the application form immediately after you have typed your answers.

STEP 3: Ask your parent(s) or legal guardian to authorize your application by signing your completed application form.   

STEP 4: Mail or deliver four (4) copies (i.e. the signed original plus 3 photocopies) of your completed application by the July 5, 2018. We will evaluate applications as we receive them and encourage you to apply quickly…preferably well before the deadline.  Your application should be directed to:

STEP 5: Once received, your application will be acknowledged by email and you will be invited to an interview.

Tips for Viewing and Completing the Application Form

 For your convenience, the LBD application form is designed so you may complete it on your computer or print a blank form and complete it by hand.

To enable parents or legal guardians to provide written authorization of your application, we decided not to provide online submission of the application form. Hence, the only way to submit your application is by mail (i.e. Canada Post) or personal delivery.

The application form is a ‘fillable PDF’ form. Data typed into the form will not be saved. Hence, you must be prepared to print the application form immediately after you have typed in your answers. Thereafter, have your parent or legal guardian sign their authorization (Page 6) on the hardcopy document.

Completing the PDF Application Form on your Computer: After opening the document using Adobe Reader®, type your information into the specified fields. Start by positioning your cursor on the first question, and press “TAB” to jump from field to field. To move backward from field to field, press “SHIFT”, “TAB”.

To answer questions that require a “Yes”, “No”, or an “X”, click on the desired answer.

Make sure all the questions have been answered prior to printing the form. Please note that filled-out PDF forms cannot be saved. You must print the form in order to retain the information.

Completing the Application Form by Hand: Should you find it more convenient to complete the application form by hand, print the blank application form and hand write your answers. In this case, to answer questions that require a “Yes”, “No”, or an “X”, print an ‘X’ on the desired answer.

Problems Viewing the PDF Document? You should either change your browser, or download the PDF document onto your hard drive and access it there. Here is a quick guide:

Internet Explorer (IE): The application form should open easily in this browser.

Google Chrome: The form may not open easily. Either change your browser to IE or download the PDF document onto your hard drive (see download arrow in upper right-hand of your screen).

Microsoft Edge: The form may not open easily. Either change your browser to IE, or download the PDF document onto your hard drive (see disk icon in upper right-hand of your screen).

Admissions Process

An Admissions Committee will assess your eligibility for admission. Here is the process for selecting qualified applicants:

STEP 1: Your Academic Achievement
You will be assessed on your Grade 9 academic performance.
While we will not specify a particular set of marks, we are looking for Grade 9 results that indicate you are progressing satisfactorily along a path leading to university or college.

STEP 2: Your Leadership Potential

We will interview you to assess your potential to improve your leadership skills through the Leadership by Design program, and also your level of maturity to persist and thrive in our multi-year program. As well, we will require verification that you are in position to attend monthly meetings (generally one Saturday per month) starting September 2018, likely at a Toronto-area university site. The interview process will be detailed to applicants.

STEP 3: Admission Decisions
If qualified, you will receive an email offering admission into the Leadership by Design program.
Decisions by the LBD Admissions Committee are final and reasons for decisions will not be provided.

Applicant Responsibilities
Having decided to be a candidate for the Leadership by Design program, you are required to:

  • complete the application form in full,
  • submit your completed application quickly…ideally well before the given deadline,
  • verify that the information you provide in your application form is accurate and complete,
  • ensure you attend your scheduled admissions interview, and
  • keep your parent(s) or legal guardian informed about your participation in the admissions process.

 Admissions Calendar – 2018

June 27:  The 2017-18 school year ends (most GTA secondary schools).

July 5 :  Deadline (at 2.00 p.m.) for LBD applications to be received at the LLI office located at 303 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto.

July-August:  LBD admission interviews will be scheduled (actual dates will be provided to eligible candidates).

Mid-August:  Eligible candidates will receive admission decisions.

September:    First meeting of newly-admitted students – Leadership by Design program (actual date TBA).
