About this Course

Scholarships open doors to educational opportunities by reducing financial barriers and empowering students to focus on their academics and personal growth. Some scholarships offer exceptional enrichment opportunities that expand career potential. Receiving scholarships recognizes achievement, potential, and community involvement, helping students reach their goals with confidence.

Join us for an interactive 2-day Scholarship Workshop designed to help you discover, plan, and apply for funding opportunities that can shape and support your educational journey. The first day will set the foundation for a resume filled with meaningful experiences. Day 2 will ensure you create compelling scholarship submissions that set you apart.

Students will gain practical skills in researching scholarships, strategizing applications, and crafting strong personal statements. The workshop will also provide practical advice on resume building — ensuring participants leave ready and confident to pursue scholarship success.

Learning Outcomes & Takeaways

By the end of this 2-day Scholarship Workshop, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and research a range of scholarship opportunities that match their academic interests, leadership experiences, and future goals.
  2. Build a leadership-rich resume that highlights meaningful school involvement, community contributions, and personal achievements with clarity and impact.
  3. Set purposeful leadership and activity goals and use an activity-tracking system to document growth, responsibilities, and accomplishments over time.
  4. Craft polished, professional resumes tailored to scholarship expectations and aligned with what selection committees value.
  5. Analyze common scholarship questions and apply effective storytelling strategies to communicate leadership, initiative, and personal growth.
  6. Develop compelling written responses and personal statements that showcase their experiences, aspirations, and unique strengths.
  7. Prepare for video interviews and manage recommendation requests with confidence, professionalism, and a clear process.

Technical Requirements & General Information

  1. The Lifelong Leadership Institute (LLI) presents this course as part of our commitment to expanding access to transformative learning experiences for Black youth—experiences that have too often been limited by historical inequities. We aim to nurture the talents, ambitions, and leadership potential that Black youth possess while ensuring they have full access to the skills and opportunities that drive future success. This workshop is focused on building effective resumes and providing strategies for enhancing scholarship eligibility.
  2. Because this is a fast-paced, two-day learning experience, only students who can commit to attending and fully participating both days should apply.
  3. The course emphasizes interactive, hands-on, and experiential learning. Students are expected to participate actively in discussions, collaborate with peers, and complete in-class assignments.
  4. What to bring: Bring a fully charged device (a.k.a. laptop computer, Chromebook, or tablet with a keyboard), plus a notebook and pen. Ensure that you have a recent resume saved on your device.
  5. Parent’s Role: Parents or legal guardians are responsible for ensuring students arrive and depart the venue safely and on time, and for providing lunch.
  6. What to Wear: The workshop takes place in an office downtown Toronto. Dress accordingly – business casual attire is strongly recommended. No need to wear your LBD T-shirts. If you have a name tag, bring it with you.
