Eligibility for SummerUp 2022

SummerUp 2022 is open to academically motivated youth who reside in the Province of Ontario and who voluntarily self identify as Black or Black African Canadian. This provision applies because SummerUp is specifically designed to offset historical disadvantages and opportunity gaps faced by Black youth. Additionally, each SummerUp course has a unique set of admission requirements (e.g. age or grade level) and candidates must read these and only apply if they meet specified admission requirements. Most SummerUp courses are designed for students who will be in secondary school in September 2022, but there are a few courses that are open to university students and young adults who are not enrolled in formal education.

How to Apply (SummerUp Courses)

Prospective students must take a moment to read the course description that is provided for each SummerUp course. There is no application fee.

Each prospective student must apply using an online application. This application must be completed in one sitting since there is no provision for saving the application and returning later to make changes. Hence, we recommend the following simple application steps.

  • Review the set of SummerUp courses and identify up to three for which you’d like to apply. Rank your three choices in order of preference (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd choice).
  • Examine the basic admission requirements for each of your choices to ensure you qualify and are able to meet the course attendance requirements.
  • The application form requires you to provide a brief statement regarding why you think a particular SummerUp course will meet your needs, or that you are well suited for the course. The application form invites you to ‘make a case for admission’ using a few sentences. It’s a good idea to prepare this text before starting the application and then plugging your responses into the form
  • Note the given application deadlines.
  • Once ready, complete and submit your online application form. Do not complete your application using your smartphone – please use a laptop or PC.

How to Register (SummerUp Webinars)

SummerUp webinars involve a single meeting which explores a specific theme. They are different in style and registration procedure from the SummerUp courses referenced above. All SummerUp webinars are scheduled for the latter half of August 2022, and they are wide open to all persons from the Black community (elementary students, secondary students, post-secondary students, parents, educators, and others within the Black community). Students enrolled in SummerUp courses may, in addition, register for each webinar. To register in advance into a SummerUp webinar, simply click on the registration link that is presented in the webinar’s description.

Selection Process (SummerUp Courses)

There will be three admissions deadlines for SummerUp 2022 course.

Thursday, June 23, 2022 (11.59 p.m. ET)
This is the early-application deadline. Submit your application by this date to have the first chance at available seats and to receive an early decision.

Thursday, June 30, 2022 (11.59 p.m. ET)
Submit your application between June 24th and June 30th and you will be evaluated if seats are available. Selection will be based on ‘rolling admissions’.

Applications received on or after July 1, 2022
Submit your application between July 1 and two days before the start of the selected course and you will be evaluated if seats are available. Selection will be based on ‘rolling admissions’. Late applicants will not be admitted after the start of a course.

Due to limited seating, some courses have ‘restricted enrolments’. Candidates who apply for more than one course will be evaluated for their first choice, then their second choice and then their third choice. The intent is to try and admit each candidate into at least one ‘restricted-enrolment course’. Note there are courses with large enrolment targets and these provide added opportunity for each applicant to participate in SummerUp 2022.

Application Tips

  • Before you apply, take a moment to read the section titled Student Responsibility and also the section titled FAQ. Both these sections provide insights into the learning environment you will enter should you be admitted into SummerUp 2022.
  • When you apply, choose your course(s) thoughtfully. Since we are strict on attendance, ensure you can attend all scheduled classes for your selected course(s). Check the mode of delivery for your course(s) (i.e. virtual; in-person; hybrid). If the course(s) you select require in-person attendance, ensure you can attend each class and be on time. If your course(s) is virtual or hybrid, ensure you have a suitable computer and reliable Internet access.
  • If you are age 18 or over on July 1, 2022, there is no requirement to involve your parents in the admissions process.
  • If you are less than 18 years of age on July 1, 2022, then you must list one parent on your application form and this parent must be aware of your application to SummerUp, and also must be supportive of you while enrolled in SummerUp.
  • If you are under age 18 and are offered admission into a SummerUp course that is delivered in hybrid or in-person mode, your parent must sign a Parental Consent and Waiver form prior to the start of your course. This form will be emailed to your parent. Your parent is urged to read the sections titled: Student Responsibility and Role for Parents. Ensure your parent’s email address is accurately stated on your application form. Invariably, our communication with applicants under age 18 will be copied to the listed parent.
  • All communications with applicants and parents are via email. Therefore, it’s best to monitor your emails and your Spam folder. If your school’s email system is unreliable during the summer, you should list your private email address.
  • To complete the admissions process, you may be required to attend an orientation session. Details will be provided.
  • In the course descriptions, reference to a high school grade always maps to the Grade you will be in September 2022. Hence, if you are required to be ‘enrolled in Grades 9, 10, or 11’, this means you will be in one of Grades 9, 10, and 11 in the academic year starting September 2022.
  • Apply early. Space in many courses is limited.
  • Four sections of the Excel course are offered. Each section offers the same course content but at a different time. If applying for Excel, please select only one section (distinguished by class meeting time).
  • Two sections of Coding by Tech Spark are offered. Each section offers the same course content but at a different time. If applying for Coding by Tech Spark, please select only one section (distinguished by class meeting time).
  • We recommend you keep a record of your course selections.
  • Ensure your postal address is accurate and complete (where applicable, include apartment number). Some courses will mail course materials via Canada Post.
  • The SummerUp admissions process is uncomplicated. Apply on time, attend an orientation if required, submit the requested information on time, receive an admission decision, accept your offer of admission by the given deadline, and commit to attending all classes. Our goal is to accept as many qualified students as possible and to place them in courses that are a fit for their academic, personal and career aspirations (given space availability). If declined admission into your preferred choices, we will try our best to offer you fresh options.
