Who Should Apply

You are a Black youth, Ontario resident, and you will:

• be enrolled in any of Grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 in September 2022, or
• be enrolled in post-secondary studies in September 2022.

As well, you are keen to develop your skills in writing code.

What

Every high school student should be challenged to answer the question: What’s the point in learning to code? The search for the answer will reveal startling but not surprising responses, including to:

– have a deeper understanding of the technology we take for granted and use every day,
– develop problem-solving skills and improve logical thinking,
– provide insights into the wide array of careers that rely on coding know-how,
– take the first steps in building a career in digital technology which is seeing rapid job growth and relatively higher salaries, and
– be better prepared for STEM-based careers such as science and engineering, as well as careers in the arts and humanities.

Of course, Toronto has developed into a major technology hub and this spells the expansion of job opportunities in the city’s digital technology sector. The student planning a career in STEM fields such as engineering, health science, all sciences, finance, and digital technology would be well advised to take this coding course.

Students will learn how to:
– express their creativity using coding and technology,
– visualize a process that accomplishes a task in their project, and
– collaborate with each other to solve problems.

Why this Matters

SummerUp’s Coding: Introduction to HTML, CSS & JavaScript course teaches students how to create and innovate using code. Students will dive deep and learn how to program, build web pages, create custom emojis, and develop interactive stories. They will also have a chance to consider the many careers for which coding skills are a necessity. This coding course will offer 10 beginner-level sessions in coding with a focus on the languages HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Here are the opinions of three students who took this course in summer 2021:

Student #1: “This program was a really good experience for me. I wasn’t so good in coding before the program but now, I feel confident in how to code.”

Student #2: “I learned how we have to be very logical in the way we approach and execute certain codes in JavaScript and programing in general.”

Student #3: “I thought that this program was wonderful. I would want to do it again.”

Admissions Information

Who: You are a Black youth, Ontario resident, and you will:

• be enrolled in any of Grades 9, 10, 11, or 12 in September 2022, or
• be enrolled in post-secondary studies in September 2022.

As well, you are keen to develop your skills in writing code. In entering this course, you must have a suitable computer and reliable Internet access. A smartphone is not a suitable device for this course. As well, you must commit to attending all scheduled learning sessions (see dates and times below).

Admissions Process: All eligible applicants will be considered for admission. Refer to application deadlines at https://llileaders.com/summerup/ Applicants may be required to attend an orientation session.

Start/Stop Dates: Coding: Introduction to HTML, CSS & JavaScript is a ten-session course which will meet for 90 minutes per session (5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.). Two Sections of this course will be offered. Each Section represents the same course but is offered at a different time. When applying, select only one Section of this course.

Week 2: Wednesday, July 6; Thursday, July 7 (5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.)
Week 3: Monday, July 11; Wednesday, July 13; Thursday, July 14 (5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.)
Week 4: Monday, July 18; Wednesday, July 20 (5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.)
Week 5: Monday, July 25 (5.30 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.)

Required Tools
To do well in this coding course, students must have a suitable computer and reliable Internet access. A mobile device is not suitable. Students who do not have the required device should request a loan of this equipment from their high school.

Valerie Osei

Valerie Osei works as a front-end software engineer with Spinmaster Ltd. An avid runner and bookworm, Valerie typically spends her time staying active, while looking forward to learning new concepts in programming and technology. She also enjoys traveling the world and experiencing various cultures.
