This section on Student Responsibilities is aimed at:
-the SummerUp student who is 18 years of age or older on July 1, 2022, who participates without parental involvement, and
-the SummerUp student who is less than 18 years of age on July 1, 2022, who participates with the consent and involvement of a parent.
It is your responsibility to know your rights and obligations as a SummerUp 2022 student. Therefore, you are required to read this information regarding student responsibilities and to adhere to the outlined policies and procedures. Failure to read this information, negligence, personal factors, or contradictory information from any sources are not acceptable grounds for not adhering to these policies and procedures. Should you require clarification of any policy and procedure, email your queries to: summerup@llileaders.com
Attendance
Students registered in a SummerUp course must attend all classes. This is so irrespective if the class is delivered in in-person, hybrid or virtual mode. SummerUp is about learning and developing important skills, and this include your commitment to attend all classes. Success in a course depends on attendance of the first class, and any student who fails to attend the first class will be excluded from that course and from any other SummerUp course. Your commitment to attendance is a high priority at SummerUp.
Late Attendance
SummerUp is an opportunity for students to practise effective time management. This starts with arriving well before the scheduled start of a class. This also means paying attention to local weather and travel conditions which affect commuting time. For in-person classes we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the class. For virtual classes, we require you join, online, 10 minutes before the class. SummerUp reserves the right to prevent latecomers from entering the class.
Recorded Classes
SummerUp encourages live real-time interactive learning. Therefore, recordings of classes will not be provided. Exceptions to this will include Coding courses or where the instructor decides otherwise.
Class Participation
Students in both in-person and virtual modes are expected to participate in adherence to instructor expectations. This includes completing and submit all required coursework by the stated deadlines. Many classes will provide opportunities for students to learn via group work and, not only is this a sound way to learn, but it is also an effective process for enhancing the skills of collaboration, teamwork and networking. With SummerUp, you are part of a community.
Readiness to Learn
SummerUp wants you to have great learning experiences, and this requires that you take measures to optimise your learning opportunities.
-Students in virtual-learning classes must have a suitable computer and reliable Internet access. This excludes use of a mobile device. Many classes include activities that cannot adequately be performed on a mobile device.
-Students may not join a class while driving or riding in any vehicle.
-Students are expected to join classes from a suitable, quiet location (appropriate surroundings), and must use a device that permits full participation in the class activities.
-Students are required to have and use a camera (full face to be depicted) and microphone when attending virtual class meetings, unless otherwise specified by the instructor. When the instructor requests cameras be turned on, students must immediately respond. Students who resist this direction will be excluded from the class.
Cancellation of Classes
In rare instances, severe weather or other emergencies may result in the cancellation of SummerUp classes – including field trips. Where necessary, make-up classes for severe weather and other emergency cancellations (e.g. power outage) may be scheduled, and this may result in having to meet on a Saturday.
Field Trips
Some SummerUp courses include field trips (rain or shine) which may include walking distances. Students must wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for inclement weather.
Lunch and Lunch Supervision
For SummerUp in-person classes and field trips, students under 18 years of age are expected to bring a packed lunch and eat in designated areas on campus. These students are discouraged from going off campus, but should they opt to leave the campus, it is understood they do so with the permission of their parents. On some occasions, and in an effort to encourage socializing and community, the LLI will provide complimentary lunch. In these situations, advanced notice will be provided. Where the LLI provides lunch or refreshments, students with special dietary needs must declare their dietary requirements.
Transportation/Travel
Both students and parents are responsibility for overall safe travel, and for safe travel to and from designated in-person course venues. At the end of in-person classes, the student and parents are responsible for home-bound travel. The LLI and its partners take no responsibility for independent travel by students before or after classes. For some field trips, there will be group travel by bus and these arrangements will be described in pre-admissions orientation.
Notice of Construction Work
During the summer, there may be construction work at some in-person SummerUp sites. Every effort will be made to keep work away from the learning spaces, and to keep noise and dust at an absolute minimum.
Media Consent
During program activities such as instructional time and any off-site excursions, students will be occasionally photographed, filmed, recorded or interviewed. This means a student’s name, language, presence, voice, and image may be publicized through media channels of the Lifelong Leadership Institute, its many partners, and of other organizations students may visit as part of SummerUp courses. These materials are gathered to update the community with SummerUp news, and/or to promote or share information about the courses and student achievements. These media channels may include, but are not restricted to websites, professional print, broadcast and online media, print publications and assorted online social media. The LLI and its partners will be the exclusive owners of the intellectual property and all other rights of images, video and/or audio recordings, as well as every other media in which students appear. Furthermore, students and their parents will not be entitled to compensation now or in the future. Students and their parents understand and agree that they will not hold the Lifelong Leadership Institute, and its partners, responsible for the unauthorized reproduction of media material beyond the control of the LLI and its partners.
Sharing of Information and Privacy
To effectively administer the SummerUP program, the Lifelong Leadership Institute collects, uses, stores and confirms the personal information provided by applicants and enrolled students. This information is shared with the LLI’s partners for the purpose of providing instruction, activities and services, awards, evaluations and reports. If you have questions, please contact us at summerup@llileaders.com
Loan of Equipment
Some SummerUp courses will loan equipment to students. In receiving this equipment, students agree to undertake safe keeping and care of such equipment and devices. Students also agree to return borrowed SummerUp equipment at the conclusion of the course, or if the student ceases to attend the courses, at the request of the instructor, or where the student is withdrawn from the course. It is the student’s responsibility to return the equipment to a site determined by the instructor or LLI.
Assessment of Risk
In-person and virtual SummerUp courses and activities may involve certain elements of risk. Accidents resulting from such activities may occur and cause injury. The risk associated with any SummerUp course and activity must be assumed by students and parents, the participants. Examples of types of incidents that may occur during SummerUp courses include, but are not limited to: slips or falls, reactions to unfamiliar or allergy causing foods, transit incidents (including during walking, bus, train and cycling).
Insurance
Students and parents participate in SummerUp courses and activities with the understanding and acceptance that the Lifelong Leadership Institute and its partners provide no health or accident insurance for students. Therefore, it is the responsibility of students and their parents to purchase appropriate health, accident, and medical insurance.
Recording Devices
Students are prohibited from recording classes and from using recording devices of any kind in their SummerUp courses. There are exceptions, and these include courses that require recordings and other media (e.g. Multimedia, Photography), courses with field trips during which students may take photographs, and where the instructor permits recordings.
Vaccination & Masks: We encourage all students, instructors and staff who are engaged in in-person and hybrid courses and activities to be fully vaccinated. While SummerUp will not require proof of vaccination for most courses, there are occasions where this is a requirement by some SummerUp partners. In these situations, we will be governed by the policies of these partners.
There are three in-person courses taught at University of Toronto Schools (UTS) where proof-of-vaccination is required in order to attend classes. Therefore, in order for you to participate in these three SummerUp courses, you must show proof of vaccination (e.g. your vaccination certificate) prior to the start of the course. Without proof of vaccination, you will not be admitted into the following three courses:
Even though rules for wearing masks are generally being relaxed, students attending SummerUp’s in-person or hybrid courses, and activities, can be required by the given instructor or organization to wear a mask. Of course, there will be exemptions for wearing a mask for outdoor activities. SummerUp’s position is to accord with the mask policy of the institution where the course is taught, and we ask students to always carry a mask. Our educational partner, University of Toronto Schools, uses the following policy regarding masks:
“Masking will be strongly recommended, unless a 2-meter distance cannot be maintained (such as close work in a classroom). Exceptions to the 2-meter spacing requirement include when actively eating/drinking, engaged in strenuous physical activity, or playing an instrument/singing/performing. Teachers leading summer courses can require participants to wear masks when the 2-meter rule cannot be maintained.” (UTS)
Medical Authorization
Students and parents understand and accept that the LLI and its partners:
– have no responsibility for any health or medical issues a student may experience while participating in SummerUp activities, and
– may provide necessary emergency medical care to the student during any emergency situation.
Student Conduct
Students are expected to conduct themselves responsibly, honestly, and with due consideration for others while enrolled in SummerUp 2022, including in-person and virtual courses and field trips, while on the property of SummerUp partners (e.g. University of Toronto, University of Toronto Schools, York University, Toronto Metropolitan University, Centennial College), and in their interactions and communications with SummerUp faculty, staff and volunteers. The Lifelong Leadership Institute that operates SummerUp, will review the actions of students charged with harassment, sexual harassment or other sexual misconduct, fraud, infringing on the rights of others, violating the rules of the LLI’s partners and host institutions, behaving inappropriately to faculty and staff, unauthorized use of LLI and partner facilities and equipment, unauthorized recording of classes, misrepresenting themselves or disturbing orderly academic functions and processes. Students who are found to have violated these rules will be excluded from all SummerUp courses and activities.
Dress
SummerUp encourages students to dress appropriately, and this applies to in-person and online courses. Students in in-person courses will be provided with SummerUp T-shirts and these must be worn at all times while on campus or while on field trips. Ready identification of SummerUp students is a safety requirement.
Course Evaluation
At the end of each course, students will be invited to provide a short evaluation of the course. Your valued feedback will help inform and improve future programming.
Research Requests
Many SummerUp courses provide unique opportunities to conduct research into student experiences and learning. Where research is planned, we invite the cooperation of students and parents. Such research may be conducted by the Lifelong Leadership Institute and/or by its various partners such as universities and government agencies. Research projects in which students and staff are invited to participate as subjects, whether for survey or scholarly research, must be approved in advance by the Lifelong Leadership Institute (LLI). As well, such research must accord with existing policies of the lead institution or agency. SummerUp ensures that students and staff are not subject to research procedures that are inappropriate, require excessive time commitments, interfere with the educational process, or violate policies of the lead institution, agency, or the Lifelong Leadership Institute.
