Introducing Tate Chin
As a twenty year old, Tate Chin is already making his mark as an academic trailblazer in STEM. Currently in his third year of mathematics at the University of Toronto Scarborough, Tate belongs to the Leadership by Design (LBD) cohort that began in 2020. Before embarking on his university journey, he graduated from St. Augustine Catholic High School, Markham, where his passion for learning first began to flourish.
Learning as a Lifelong Venture
Tate Chin exemplifies academic excellence and intellectual curiosity. In 2023, the LBD program recognized Tate’s achievements by awarding him the G. Raymond Chang Leader Scholarship. Standing out among a field of talented students, Tate’s commitment to mathematics and to the LBD program made him a deserving recipient of this scholarship that was sponsored by Dr. Donette Chin-Loy Chang, the current chancellor of Toronto Metropolitan University.
The LBD Experience
A highly skilled computer programmer and app designer, Tate is one of many LBD students deeply invested in STEM. After completing high school, he chose to pursue mathematics at the University of Toronto Scarborough, continuing to nurture his love for the subject. Tate attributes much of his growth to the LBD program, noting that the greatest lesson he learned was the importance of intellectual curiosity. “The ability to always want to learn more is something I took to heart,” he said.
Through the LBD program, Tate also honed his public speaking skills. He fondly remembers moments with LBD that boosted his confidence and sparked interests in politics and social justice. These experiences gave him the language and confidence to advocate for causes that matter to him.
For Tate, the desire to learn and grow extends beyond academics. He has found personal achievement in taking up mixed martial arts (MMA) and boxing as forms of self-care during the demanding school year.
“Going to the gym is amazing. It relieves stress, it keeps you in shape, and it boosts your confidence,” he said.
Participation in sports has helped Tate develop discipline and focus, further strengthening his leadership abilities. He believes that strong leadership shines through in all areas of life, whether in the classroom or on the mats.
University Life: In Tate’s Words
Asked about his university experience, Tate highlighted the opportunities to connect with others and participate in campus clubs. “Going to clubs and meeting new people, especially outside of my program. I go to a board game club and of course, there’s an MMA club, and I go there too.”
When prompted to describe the LBD program in one word, Tate replied, “I found it really fun. It was a fun experience meeting new people and I really liked having the group discussions.”
Advice for Current Students
Tate encourages students to resist the urge to compare themselves to others or put too much pressure on themselves. For those uncertain about their path after graduation, he suggests keeping an open mind and considering both large and small universities. Smaller schools, he notes, can offer excellent learning opportunities and foster meaningful relationships with teachers and peers.
A Lasting Impact
Tate’s commitment to lifelong learning serves as an inspiration for LBD students and the wider university community. His curious mind and pursuit of growth demonstrate that learning extends far beyond the classroom.
